Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — The Franciscan University Baron
soccer team fell to the Medaille College Mavericks 4-1 despite
playing a strong defensive game.
"I was very happy with our pace of play and our shape on the
field. We were defending very effectively today," head coach Ward
Rogers said.
The only Franciscan goal of the game was a header from sophomore
and Steubenville, Ohio native Peter Herrmann off of a cross from
Joseph Krilich in the 57th minute of play.
"Peter had a great game for us today. He had some great looking
shots and helped to take some pressure off of our defense," Rogers
said.
Goalkeeper Chris McNamara had 13 saves on the game, many of
which required quick, and correct reads of the opponents attack,
including a diving effort with 30 seconds left, to keep the score 4
- 1.
"Chris had some very good saves. He's playing very well and
gaining experience with every game. He is very effective at keeping
the ball out of the net," Rogers said.
John Herrmann and the defense played very well helping to hold
the Mavericks and not allow any more shots to connect with the back
of the net.
"We are playing very well defensively," Rogers said. "In our
desire to score more goals sometimes we become impatient and we
should hold the ball more on the offensive side of the field to
take some pressure off of our defense."
Rogers added that Blake Bonilla made some key maneuvers to keep
control of the ball and pass it down the field to strive for shot
opportunities. Also, Brian Bobak did a good job controlling the
ball and creating space on the field.
"We really appreciate the fans and thank them for being here
today. And before the end of the year we are hopeful we will have
some victories to give them," Rogers said.
The Barons are now 0-10 on the overall season and 0-3 in the
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Continuing their pursuit
of their first victory on the season the Barons take on
non-conference opponent Bethany College on Oct. 3 at 7:30p.m.
