BETHANY, W.Va. — The Lady Baron soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Bethany College, 2-0, to come away with its first win of the season. Sophomore Ashley Ruttencutter scored both goals unassisted for FUS.
"We played an amazing game tonight," said head coach Johann Marin. "Bethany is always a formidable opponent, but my team played hard and obediently tonight."

Ruttencutter scored one of her two goals in the 23rd minute when she dribbled into open space and shot from outside the box, curving the ball over Bethany keeper Brittany Sadler's head. Her second goal, which she scored in the 60th minute, was converted in a similar manner.

"It was an outstanding game from the our defensive line, they played organized and aggressively and the defense was not broken down once tonight," Marin said.

The defense only allowed six shots on goal throughout the whole game. Mallory Garthwaite made her debut in goal for FUS in this game and made 6 saves on the night.

"We got an excellent game and clean sheet from Mallory Garthwaite," said Marin. "Her number of saves and precise distribution combined with the defense was essential to our victory tonight," Marin said.

The Lady Barons, now 1-2 on the year, look to get their second straight win against a non-conference opponent when they take on St. Vincent College on Sunday Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
