Lady Barons Victorious in Home Opener

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Franciscan University's women's volleyball team sealed a victory in its first home match of the season as they defeated Waynesburg University 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22). Not only will the Lady Barons start out 1-0 at home on the year, but they also stand above .500 overall for the first time this season.

FUS head coach Kelly Herrmann beamed about her team's mental awareness.

"In the third and fourth games we were really playing against ourselves," Herrmann said. "We could have thrown in the towel, but we were able to manage and maintain our concentration to do some great things."

Christina Marie Lawrence led the defense with 29 digs while Maria Prezzia added 24. The Lady Barons recorded 115 digs in their victory.

Amy O' Keefe recorded 18 assists and Lara Holley added 11 to help the Lady Barons.

"Our setters, Amy and Lara gave us a lot of consistency and confidence. Setting is our greatest improvement over the last few years," Herrmann said.

Anna Cain led the offense with 13 kills.

"Anna is the picture of consistency," Herrmann said.

The Lady Barons are now 3-2 overall. They travel to Case Western Reserve on September 7 to play in the Marcia French Memorial Tournament.
