Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Franciscan University's women's tennis team lost to Westminster College 8-1 in a repeat of last season's 9-0 loss against the Titans. The Lady Barons hope to bounce back when they play Westminster again later in the season.
"Westminster is a tougher team than they were last year. They put in the extra time," said head coach Jenna Lynch. "Our girls are capable of playing at their level if we put the work in."
The Lady Barons' Number two doubles team Alanna Murray and Kristina Godnick were the only Barons' team to win their match 8-6 to help the Barons avoid being swept by Westminster.
"Kristina and Alanna were down the first set, but once they broke Westminster's serve, their shots picked up and their teamwork was phenomenal," said Lynch. "They played to the highest level of their potential."
Number one singles player Alanna Murray lost her match 6-0, 6-0. Along with her teammates, Murray looked nervous at times yet focused throughout the match. Despite some rough moments, the Lady Barons refused to become discouraged.
Coach Lynch said she wants the girls to learn from the match, and not become frustrated.
"The girls need to shake this match off and walk out mentally fresh this weekend," Lynch said. "We need to forget about the loss, while still picking up on our weaknesses and errors so we don't make them again."
The Lady Barons head to New York this weekend, September 8th and 9th to play their first conference matches of the season against D'Youville and Medaille.
