Box Score BUFFALO, NY —The Franciscan University women's basketball
team fell to the Medaille College Mavericks 82-40 after a long week
of conference games. The Barons played La Roche College, the number
one team in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, on
Wednesday at home, then battled Medaille, the second place team in
their conference, and were unable to pull out a win.
Franciscan had the lead early when Sophomore Helen Raines sank a
three pointer, but the lead was short-lived as the Mavericks began
an aggressive run just a minute later, ending the first half
40-25.
"After battling the two best teams in our conference, we had
some mental lapses which put us in danger" head coach Suzy Delaney
said.
The second half continued the same way. FUS made only 25 percent
of their shots, while Medaille made shot 50 percent, making it
impossible for the Barons to stay ahead.
Sophomore forward Allyson Cooney, however, pulled out one of her
best games of the season, scoring ten points, grabbing nine boards,
and making all four of her foul shots.
"Allyson was a very positive part of today's game," Delaney
said. "She is always aggressive on defense, and she took two
charges today."
The Barons only pulled out 15 points in the second half, 8 of
which were scored by captain Lacey Huck, who finished the game with
12 points.
Medaille closed the game with an 82-40 win, making Franciscan
2-6 in the AMCC and 3-12 overall.
"Medaille is a very good team," Delaney said. "They have been
for several years. Despite our loss, the girls are getting the
chance to experience great competition."
The Barons will play their fifth conference game in a row when
they take on Mt. Aloysius College at home on January 14 at 6:00
pm.
