Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio—Franciscan University's
women's basketball team fell to University of Pittsburgh at
Greensburg in overtime this Wednesday, 61-56, at home in one of the
most exciting games of the season.
Playing the Bobcats earlier in the season, the Lady Barons fell
to Greensburg 59-50 on December 5th. Competing in a
similarly fast-paced game, the Barons stayed right with the Bobcats
in the second match-up of the year. It was a Helen Raines
game-tying layup in the last minute of regulation that sent the
game into overtime.
“We played hard,” Franciscan head coach Suzy Delaney
said. “We put ourselves in a position to win the game in
overtime.”
Down 31-24 at halftime, the Lady Barons came back to dominate
the second half; Franciscan outscored the Lady Bobcats 28-21.
Franciscan displayed superior post defense in the second half
limiting Lady Bobcat touches downlow.
Sophomore Lacy Huck played an outstanding game with 22 points
and 12 boards, her eighth double-double of the season. That stat
moves her into a tie for 36th in the Division III
women's basketball for double-doubles.
“Our offense and our defense played a consistent game on
both ends,” Delaney said. “We should be proud of each
other.”
Sophomore Helen Raines also played an aggressive game, tying the
score at the end of the second half to send the Lady Barons into
overtime. With less than a minute left, Raines drove the ball
straight through the Bobcats defense, and was able to gain five
more minutes of playing time for her team.
“Helen had a great game and a big shot,” Delaney
said. “She made a gutsy drive and a soft kiss to send us into
overtime.”
The Barons continued to battle in overtime, but after foul shots
put the Bobcats ahead by four with 12 seconds left, FUS was unable
to close the gap.
“None of our girls quit throughout the game,”
Delaney said. “We will not back down in the second half of
our season. We're going to continue to fight.”
Franciscan will put that fight to the test against
D'Youville College at home this Saturday, Jan.
