Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio— Franciscan University's
women's basketball team fell to the D'Youville College
Spartans in overtime 62-58. This was the team's second game
to go into overtime in the past four days, as Franciscan fell to
Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday.
FUS played with aggression and composure in the first half,
clearly setting the pace and tiring the Lady Spartans out.
Sophomore forward Allyson Cooney had five points and ten boards in
the first half to help the Barons to a 19-15 first half lead.
“Our shooting was better in the second half than in the
first,” head coach Suzy Delaney said. “We missed a lot
of free throw and front-end shots that we needed to
make.”
D'Youville picked up their defense in the second half,
eliminating opportunities for FUS to get shots. Despite the tough
defense, the Lady Barons held a ten-point lead over their opponents
through most of the second half. Sophomore guard Helen Raines had
seven points and five steals while being pin-pointed the whole game
by D'Youville's physical defense.
“Helen played very hard,” Delaney said. “She
had five big steals that kept us in the game and gave her teammates
a spark.”
Freshman guard Monica Dawyot also had seven points, eleven
boards, and three steals. Defensively, Franciscan kept
D'Youville's shooters in check, but the Spartans were
still able to catch up by shutting down Franciscan's
offense.
The score was 52-49 in favor of the Lady Barons as regulation
came to an end, but a desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer
was banked in by D'Youville's Bridget Andrews to send
the game into overtime.
“We did a fine job on defense. We had all their shooters
covered,” Delaney said. “But we still weren't
making the mental adjustments that we needed to make in several key
areas.”
In the five minutes of overtime, the Barons only made six points
while D'Youville made ten. Despite Raines' and
Dawyot's multiple steals throughout overtime, the Spartans
came out on top 62-58 after Franciscan missed foul-shots that set
them behind.
“The game was frustrating at times,” Delaney said.
“We're a young team, which is a positive. We're
working through our challenges and gaining experience.”
The girls have a week off until next Saturday, Feb.
2nd, when they will play Penn State-Behrend.
