Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Oh.— In their second home game this week,
the Franciscan University men's basketball team squandered a
second-half lead and was unable to secure a win against the
D'Youville College Spartans, falling 68-57.
D'Youville scored the first bucket of the game, but a
three-pointer from Franciscan guard Daniel Kleinschnitz gave the
Barons the lead, which they held on to most of the first half with
solid three-point shooting from freshman guard Christian Duke,
strong inside post play by forward Joseph Rine, and Duke's
flawless foul shot response to the Hawk's two technical fouls
three minutes before the half.
The Barons held a one-point lead at halftime, and shot 50% from
behind the arc in the first half.
In the second half, the Barons controlled the game for the first
ten minutes, building up their lead to as many as eight points.
However, they started to miss shots from the floor and allowed easy
buckets from their opponent which allowed D'Youville to crawl
back in and take a lead, one they would not lose.
This Baron break- down in the final five minutes head coach John
Lamanna attributed to the team's lack of maturity and
experience.
“There comes a time in the game where you need to make a
play defensively or you need to make a play offensively and we
seemed to do neither play during either time,” Lamanna said.
“When we needed to get a stop, we gave up an and-one; when we
came down and we needed to respond or we did get a stop and we
needed to score, we got a shot clock violation or a turnover.
That's the difference in the game and it comes down to
experience and it comes down to needing to keep working on
execution.”
Despite powerful post play by the Spartan's big man,
Oliver Prince, Franciscan power forward Joseph Rine held his own
with his fifth consecutive double-double: 12 points, 11 rebounds,
and six blocks on the night. The team struggled to stop Prince on
offense, however, as he scored 20 of D'Youville's
points and brought down 13 rebounds.
Also standing out for Franciscan were freshman Christian Duke
and Derrick David. Duke had 18 points and four rebounds on the
night and David controlled the tempo of the game with his speedy
and accurate ball movement.
The Barons will next play at Penn St.-Behrend on Saturday, Feb.
