Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio –The Franciscan University Men's soccer team won their first conference victory 4-1 over Univ. of Pitt.-Greensburg. After coming back from a one goal deficit early in the game, the Barons slammed four goals in to the back of the net, leaving the Bobcats out to dry.
The Bobcats struck early off the start scoring their first and only goal in the twenty third minute of the game. Two minutes later the Barons responded when a shot from sophomore John Imbimbo was deflected in front of the goal and a waiting Brian Bobak finished it off.
"We were a little nervous in the first half," Head Coach Ward Rogers said. "We had a chance to settle down at half time and in the second half we had longer possession and started to move the ball a little more crisply."
Franciscan possessed the ball through most of the second half, creating opportunities for scoring. Their second goal of the game came in the sixty-ninth minute, when freshman Joseph Duran, assisted by Bobak, won a contested header in the box; knocking the ball into the near side of the net.
"We wanted to get numbers to the ball and were trying to put pressure on them and then clean up the mess," Rogers said. "We normally generate a lot of the turnovers but instead we were creating those turnovers and getting the ball in the neutral zone, giving us a shorter field to move down."
Late in the second half, Captain Jesse Saltarelli carried the ball down the middle of the field, passing it off to Imbimbo who shot and scored from twenty yards out, solidifying the Barons lead. Franciscan increased their lead with a goal from sophomore Edwin de St. Aubin, ending with a three goal victory over the Bobcats.
"We talked about our journey to the AMCC tournament and how it's going to go through checkpoints, today was the first checkpoint and we responded very well," Roger's said of the win. "We can't get over confident in what we've been doing. There are still some weaknesses we need to work on we'll be doing that as we train."
Looking ahead, the Barons face conference opponent Medaille College on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 6pm.
