Box Score CRESSON, PA- After one of the best seasons in University history, Baron soccer finished their season with a 2-1 loss to Mt. Aloysius College. Despite missing out on the play offs, the talented young team looks forward to next year with high hopes for a spot in the AMCC tournament.
The Barons came out fighting hard against the Mounties, creating several opportunities on goal. The game was tightly contested and the Baron defense managed to hold off Alyosius with help from Franciscan goal keeper Edward Huber.
"We were doing a very good job shutting them down and they weren't able to penetrate the defense," head coach Ward Rogers said. "They had several good chances but defensively we took them away and Eddie made several good saves."
Franciscan was first on the board late in the half. Freshman forward Joe Duran carried the ball down the right wing and cut sharply toward the near post but was fouled by a Mounty defender. Sophomore midfielder John Imbimbo converted the penalty kick to put the Barons on the board.
At half time, Rogers made some adjustments with the hope of increasing the team's lead. Despite the adjustments, the Barons were unable to finish the final ball and the Mounties started to come back.
The Baron defense let up a free kick thirty-five-yards out from the goal. Franciscan was unable to gain control of the ball and in a mad scramble the Mounties were able to score tying the game 1-1.
Aloysius scored their second goal off a cross from the outside knocking it in at the far post. Franciscan was unable to come back from the one goal deficit and as a result didn't make it to the AMCC tournament.
Despite disappointment at not making the tournament, Baron soccer had one of their best seasons finishing with a 5-11 record, after winning only one game last year.
"It's very exciting and it's a testament to what the guys were able to do," Rogers said.
"If we continue to develop under the style of play we're using, we're really going to be a team to deal with next year in AMCC."
Some notable players that had an outstanding season are: sophomores Jace Vansteenburg, John Imbimbo, and sophomore Edwin de St. Aubin; senior Luke Merry, and Blake Bonilla stepped up as senior leaders and helped carry the team, along with captains Jesse Saltarelli and Peter Mooney.
"The brotherhood on this team and the faith and trust of all the players really shows that they are men of God and very fine individuals."
