Early Deficit Overwhelms Baron Soccer in 6-1 Loss

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. –Unable to withstand a constant firing barrage from Medaille College the Baron soccer team fell 6-1 in a game with a four goal deficit in the first half.

Medaille was off to a quick start scoring their first goal seven minutes into the first half. The Barons couldn't quite keep up with the pace of the game as they were trapped defensively, and were unable to work the ball up the field to create opportunities.

"Medaille had a lot of speed, they are very talented," Head Coach Ward Rogers said. "We had trouble moving the ball quickly; however, we made some adjustments at half time and were able to move the ball down the field more effectively."

The Barons embraced the changes at half time in order to carry the momentum and gain possession on the field. Franciscan's lone goal came early in the second half from freshman Joseph Duran. After a nice clear from the back, Duran had a fast break down the wing and made a beautiful shot for their first and only goal.

"Usually when we get down 4-0 it takes some of the spirit out of what we're doing, but it really didn't, Rogers said of their play in the second half. "It actually fired us up and we played harder trying to erase that deficit."

The Barons continued to maintain possession until late in the second half when the Mavericks scored their fifth goal, erasing any chance Franciscan might have had. The game ended 6-1 with the Mavericks outshooting the Barons 33-10.

Despite a tough loss, Rogers said his team played well adjusting on the field and keeping a positive attitude. They made necessary adjustments and played very well, with strong performances coming from junior Peter Hermann at outside back and junior Jesse Saltarelli in the midfield.

"I thought the guys really got it together," Rogers said. "Being able to adjust on the fly and regroup at halftime really shows how far they've come as team and soccer players. They're really starting to understand the game and how we're trying to play."

The Barons return home to face conference opponent Hilbert College, on Saturday Oct. 12, at 1pm.
