PITTSBURGH, Pa- Despite a tough loss to Carnegie Mellon University 108-52 the Lady Barons fought hard on the final day of the Doubletree Classic.
"We asked a lot of our players these last couple days playing two tough teams within only 14 hours and only seven players available," head coach Suzy Delaney said. "We saw a lot of individual positives and we have to regroup and translate those into team success."
The Tartans were off to a strong start scoring 55 of their points in the first half and consistently pressuring the Baron defense. Despite the Tartans constant pressure on the defensive end the Barons were able to create some looks on offense but were unable to convert. FUS was also missing their point guard who was out with an injury.
"We saw a lot of positives and good things to take away, but of course there are a lot of things to work on," Delaney said. "That's the point of the non-conference season, and we have to just keep working hard and get our injured players back."
The Barons were not able to come back in the second half but continued to play hard looking for every opportunity. The Tartans scored 53 points in the second half finishing off the game with a 108-52 victory.
Looking away from the scoreboard the Lady Barons had some exceptional play from freshmanLauren Shaffer. Coming off an injury that hampered her pre-season play Shaffer played very strong defensively.
"Shaffer was a spark for the team defensively," Delaney said. "She exemplifies how the defense and the intensity should be on the court."
FUS will look to prepare for what the season has to offer by using the Doubletree Classic as a spring board to get their players more comfortable playing with each other and increasing their work load.
"We're going to use this week to prepare as best we can," Delaney said looking ahead to their next game. "We want to crank up the intensity, keep pushing each other to get better, and do the best we can."
The Barons face the College of Wooster in their first home game of the season on Nov. 23, at 3pm.
