Box Score STEUBENVILLE, OH – The young Barons Basketball team suffered their second loss of the season against a veteran Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, who dominated the second half that led to a final score of 78-69. Sophomore center Joseph Rine and senior forward Jordan Wilkinson both fouled out in the second half allowing Waynesburg the opportunity to close out the game.
FUS started off strong putting together offensive runs while shooting 47 percent from the field. Defensively, they were able to contain the Yellow Jackets in the paint gathering six blocks and 12 defensive rebounds. Rine led the defensive assault with six rebounds three blocks and also contributed eight points on the other end.
Going into the halftime break only down 42-41, FUS looked primed to come out and take over the game in the second half. It never happened. The Barons had a few opportunities to take advantage in the second half with foul shots but had a hard time converting shooting just 53 percent.
They also struggled to find a rhythm with both of their big men forced to watch from the bench. Rine was able to get one more point and rebound before fouling out and Wilkinson contributed three points before his final foul was called.
"We just got out competed in the second half," Head Coach John Lamanna said. "We are still a new group of guys and Waynesburg is a veteran team."
Nothing came easy for the Barons who struggled on both ends of the floor. Franciscan shot 33.3 percent from the field and without their size they were only able to gather one offensive rebound. Sophomore guard Timmy Schenk only scored three points in the second half after putting up eight in the first.
The same was true junior guard Moses Sullivan who put up seven in the first but never found sustainable rhythm after the halftime break. On the other side of the floor FUS was out rebounded 51-35 and had 11 turnovers.
Even with from players like sophomore guard Derrick David who scored all nine of his points in the second half and collected two steals, the Barons could not handle the more experienced Waynesburg team. When asked where the team goes from here Lamanna simply stated the obvious.
"We got to do everything we can to get things corrected and cleaned up," Lamanna said. "All 11 of us got out competed."
Franciscan will have just 72 hours to get corrected as they prepare for the second home game of the season against Grove City College on Nov. 23 at 6:00 pm.
