Box Score ERIE, Pa. - The Franciscan University Men's Basketball team battled through a game where nothing seemed to go there way against Penn State Behrend, the top team in the AMCC. The Barons lost 88-36 on the road in their toughest game of the season.
FUS kept Behrend off the scoreboard for the first two minutes but then opened the flood gates and landed on the wrong end of a 32-2 run. The first half ended with the Barons down 42-13.
"We didn't take care of the basketball and we didn't rebound," head coach, John Lamanna said after the game. "We had a goal of 10 or less turnovers and a goal to only give up 5 offensive boards."
The Barons didn't accomplish either goal, giving up 17 turnovers and allowing 9 offensive boards. Franciscan just could not come up with an answer for Behrend's offensive attack, as the Lions shot 64.2 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from the three point line.
The shots didn't fall so easily for Franciscan who shot 29.4 percent from the field. The Baron's leading scorers were freshman David Derrick and Daniel Kleinschnitz with eight points a piece. Center Joseph Rine earned three more blocks to his season count. Rine is currently fourth in NCAA Division III in blocked shots per game, averaging 3.37.
The Barons will try to look past this game and move forward.
"This happens from time to time," Lamanna said. "The only way to go is up. We'll bounce back."
Franciscan will have a chance to bounce back on the road against LaRoche College on Feb 6 at 8 pm. The Baron's played LaRoche, another one of the top teams in the conference, to a close game earlier in the season.
