Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- Franciscan University's softball team
completed their second doubleheader of the season, playing against
Becker College and Haverford College. The Lady Barons lost 13-12
after leading most of the game against Becker College and lost 22-1
against their second opponent, Haverford College.
FUS played their first game of the season on Monday against
Becker College and lost by a score of 24-4.
“Everybody was more confident and aggressive with hitting
and fielding the ball. Last night was our first time actually being
on a field. Tonight they were on fire,” FUS assistant coach
Justine Krivoniak said.
The Lady Barons maintained a 5-0 lead until the third inning
when Becker managed to begin scoring.
The score was 10-6 in favor of Becker going into the top of the
seventh inning when Franciscan exploded for six runs to take a
12-10 lead.
However, Becker had a comeback of their own in store for
the bottom of the seventh when they scored three runs to hand the
Lady Barons the loss.
“Everybody played awesome. Everybody was hitting the ball
and had great plays in the field. It was a really close game back
and forth,” Krivoniak said. “We were really well
matched with that one.”
Rose Mary Cassidy went an astounding 5-5 from the plate with
four runs batted in and three runs scored. Hailey Wesselman was 3-3
with three doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Lady Barons
put on a clinic recording 16 hits and batting .457 as a team, but
it was not enough for their first win of the year.
The Lady Barons could not keep the second game of the day as
close against Haverford.
“Both of our pitchers got to pitch and they did
awesome,” Krivoniak said. “It was a long five innings
and our pitchers threw a lot of pitches and stayed really
strong.”
“They played like a team,” “Everybody was
talking to each other. They played the best that they
could.”
They Lady Barons look to continue improving in their young
season and will look for their first win of the year after an
off-day tomorrow. They will continue their Florida tour on Thursday
vs. St. Lawrence University at 1 p.m. and Thomas (ME) at 3 p.m.
