CLERMONT, Fla. – After coming off a tough double header a day ago, the Franciscan University women's softball team displayed focus and tenacity in their games against St. Lawrence University and Thomas College. Despite losing both games, the Lady Barons will fly home from Florida confident in their team's ability to play focused and with intensity.

FUS dropped their first game against St. Lawrence 4-3. This was a rematch between the two teams from March 11, when the Lady Barons lost by a score of 16-1.

Franciscan was down 3-1 in the seventh inning when sophomore Katrina Fabian knocked in a pair of runs to tie the game. While the Saints did score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, FUS head coach Jennifer Parker was proud of her team's 24-hour turnaround.

"We had a team meeting last night and it was a turning point," Parker said. "Our problem was a lack of focus, but we showed such a vast improvement from the two games we had yesterday."

One of the biggest improvements was their pitching. Freshman Molly Clarahan started and pitched the game through four innings against the Saints. She threw two strike outs while she was on the mound. Eloise Rover, also a freshman, took the mound for the remainder of the game and pitched two strike outs of her own.

"They have really worked on their accuracy," Parker said. "They have definitely improved and their confidence is incredibly high."

After a tough loss, FUS tried to bounce back against Thomas College but fell short a second time losing 7-4. The Lady Barons were down 2-1, but a fifth inning error and a walk cost Franciscan five runs. The Lady Barons retaliated in the sixth inning by adding three runs but they could not close out the comeback against the Terriers.

"We played really well for the majority of that game," Parker said. "Our biggest problem was that we left a lot of runners on base. You cannot do that and expect to win."

While Franciscan's trip to Florida did not yield any wins, Parker is excited to come back home and face familiar and unfamiliar rivals.

"It will be an advantage for us to be in front of a home crowd," Parker said. "I cannot wait to get home and show how much the girls have grown as a team."

The Lady Barons first home game will be against Chatham University on March 20.
