Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. - It was a good homecoming for the Franciscan University men's tennis team who won their second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game of the season, defeating Penn State Altoona 8-1.
Due to weather implications, head coach Jeremy Ellis decided to play the match indoors in Pittsburgh after practicing and playing matches for a week in Florida during the university's spring break.
"The win feels really good today," Ellis said "It felt nice to battle against the conference. Sometimes it is difficult for teams to go from playing outside in the warm weather, to playing inside, but we made the transition well."
Freshman David Freytag came out strong in the first home match of the spring season winning his doubles match with John Shultis (8-4) and his singles matches (6-0, 6-4). After winning his doubles match, Freytag was called upon to take Shultis's place in singles play when Shultis was sidelined by a sore shoulder. When his number was called, the freshman helped seal the victory for his team.
"I hit more consistently than usual," Freytag said about his last minute appearance in singles play. "My serves and returns were the best I have had in a match. Coming off of spring break and being able to play everyday for a few hours in Florida helped me get into rhythm."
Ellis echoed his player's reaction to the match, and said that he was happy with how well Freytag played on short notice.
"He played well with only a few minutes notices," Ellis said. "He always comes into every match ready to go."
Coming off the exciting win, the Barons will stay home for their next game against Mount Union on Mar 19 at 3:30. This will be a rematch between the two teams who met previously in September when FUS lost 7-2.
