Box Score 2 Pittsburgh, PA- The Franciscan University softball team was defeated by La Roche College losing both games of an away doubleheader 15-1 and 8-0.
The Lady Barons hit well in the first game, with freshman third baseman Hailey Wesselman hitting a sacrifice pop fly to bring home junior left fielder Rosemary Cassidy. After getting on the board with a run at the first inning, things looked hopeful for FUS.
Franciscan was unable to keep that momentum, however, and their scoring stopped after the first inning while the Lady Redhawks continued to score.
"We made a lot of errors in the field and we were giving up walks," head coach Jen Parker said. "It was all the same problems that have plagued us in the past."
The second game didn't bring any more success for Franciscan, as the Lady Barons were shutout. The bats weren't completely quiet for FUS but the team wasn't able to bring baserunners home.
"We weren't able to get any runs on the board again," Parker said. "We left a lot of runners stranded. Again it is the same problems that are plaguing us."
Although the Lady Barons still seek out success as a team, Wesselman continues to stand out as a growing leader. Parker said she commends her on a strong defensive game against the Lady Redhawks and for bring in the team's only run. As far as the team goes, the Lady Barons know that they need to improve upon.
"We are trying to correct those problems and make sure the girls know how to make heads up plays," Parker said. "Errors right now are not working in our favor. Obviously, errors never do. We need to correct those."
Franciscan's next game will be on Friday, April 19 in a home doubleheader against Penn St. Beaver at 3 and 5 p.m.
