Box Score WEXFORD, Pa. – The Franciscan University men's
tennis team's winning streak continued into the Allegheny
Mountain Collegiate Conference post season tournament as they beat
the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, 5-0. After their
victory, the Barons will have less than 24 hours prepare to take on
Penn State Behrend for the AMCC Championship.
FUS had a strong day against the Bobcats needing only five games
to seal their victory. Their three doubles teams, highlighted by
captain Paul Jarzynka and junior Brian Robau, won all three of
their matches needing only two singles victories by junior Leonel
Lacayo and Robau to secure the semi-final victory.
“We got our five victories pretty quickly,” head
coach Jeremy Ellis said. “We have been getting a lot of
hitting in recently to prepare for this weekend. We had to be
prepared to beat Greensburg and Penn State- Behrend.”
It has been a successful year for Franciscan who ended its
regular season undefeated against the AMCC and are looking to
follow up their stellar season with their first conference title
and trip to the NCAA tournament.
Franciscan is looking for redemption against the Lions who beat
them in last year's championships. FUS beat Behrend on April
7 and look to continue the trend tomorrow.
“We will be playing with a lot of urgency tomorrow,”
Jarzynka said. “We played well against Behrend earlier this
month.”
Jarzynka is fresh off being named the AMCC Player of the Week
for the second time this season.
“We cannot get too high on ourselves right now,”
Jarzynka said. “We are focused on getting the win. We
don't want to strain ourselves too much thinking about
anything else.”
Ellis said the same thing as his captain about tomorrow's
game.
“It's encouraging to be around this group of
guys,” Ellis said. “We want to get a good night's
sleep and continue the momentum for tomorrow.”
