Stronger Second Game Still Not Enough for Lady Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan University Lady Barons played their second consecutive home doubleheader and lost both contests to Grove City College, first by a score of 9-1, and by a score of 11-5 in game two.

In the first game of the day, the visiting Wolverines came out with four runs in the first inning, which set the tone for the game.

“We didn't start off the first inning well,” head coach Jen Parker said, “and that set the stage for the first game. We weren't very strong in the first inning. It wasn't a very good game and that's the bottom line.”

Parker also noted that the pitcher for the Lady Barons in game one, Molly Clarahan, also pitched both games yesterday, so fatigue was a factor in her performance.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Eloise Rover started out strong in game two pitching consistently and allowing Franciscan to hold a 4-3 lead going into the top of the fifth inning.

“[Eloise] came in very confident which was good for us,” Parker said. “She pitched really strong; she was hitting her pitches and didn't give up too many walks. She was rested, and that definitely helped.”

However, the Grove City bats began to came alive and the Wolverines scored eight runs to the Lady Barons' one over the last three innings sealing the deal on an 11-5 victory.

“Our fielding was a lot better in the second game,” Parker said. “We played a lot tighter and we were a little bit more aggressive. I really think they had their heads in the second game and when they keep their heads up, they definitely play a lot better. People are going to make errors, that's the game of softball, but you can't let that error define you.”

Hailey Wesselman was the highlight of the day at the plate for the Lady Barons going 2-2 in game two with two walks and three runs scored.

The Lady Barons will look to get their first win of the season as they travel to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on Saturday for a conference doubleheader.
