Box Score BRADFORD,
Pa. -- Coming into their second game in two days, the Franciscan
University men's tennis team beat AMCC opponent the University of
Pittsburgh at Bradford, 9-0. This marks the first match since their
trip to Florida where the Barons competed in favorable weather.
Franciscan took advantage of the conditions and cruised to victory
while being led by Assistant Head Coach Shannon Irvin.
"We went in and gave it our all today," Irvin said. "Playing in
the cold weather like we have been has forced our guys to adjust
their playing style. Today, they were able to play their type of
game and we did really well."
The Barons, who are in the middle of a three day road trip, were
firing on all cylinders against the Panthers who only scored three
volleys the entire match. Individually, team captain Paul Jarzynka
set the standard by winning both his singles and doubles matches
8-0.
"Matches like today require a lot of focus," Jarzynka said. "I
was really hitting my returns well and I hope to take this momentum
into tomorrow."
Jarzynka's partnership with junior Brian Robau has created one
of the most dominant doubles teams FUS has ever had. Both have been
preparing and focused for Sunday's match against the reigning AMCC
champions Penn State-Behrend for nearly a year. If the Barons win
they will improve to 6-0 in the conference and solidify the number
one spot in the conference championship tournament.
"I expect to win tomorrow," Jarzynka said. "We have been
practicing a lot and have put a lot of focus on our doubles play in
preparation. Brian [Robau] and I have great chemistry after playing
together for two years and when we are focused we can beat
anybody."
Jarzynka and Robau stand as the only team on the roster to beat
a Division II school in doubles play; they beat Palm Beach Atlantic
in doubles play during the teams time in Florida over spring
break.
Irvin echoed her player's confidence citing Franciscan's tough
weekend as a blessing in disguise.
"Playing two consecutive games like we did really helps us,"
Irvin said. "We prefer to play back to back because we have gotten
in more workouts and match play in this weekend than we have in the
past two weeks due to bad weather."
FUS will look to solidify their position atop the AMCC tomorrow
in tomorrow's road match-up with the Behrend Lions, who were also
undefeated going into their Saturday match.
