MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Franciscan University track and field team wrapped up another season at the annual Allegheny College Gator Invite, breaking two school records and setting a number of personal bests that demonstrated the culmination of their efforts throughout the year.
"We set out every season with a plan to peak at the end, and today there were so many pr's and school records," head coach Vince Oliver said. "The team was fantastic."
Senior captain Bill Jones delivered his finest, breaking both of his previously held school records in the 800 meter run and the 1500 meter with times of 1:53.82 and 3:50.01 respectively. Jones placed fifth and second in his races, spurred on by the high level of competition.
"It was a solid day for speed workouts," Jones said. "My whole family was there to see it, and it was great!"
While this was Jones's last team meet in as a collegiate runner, the Baron athlete will travel to compete at the Division III track and field National Championships May 23-25.
Junior runner Jacob Baugher also broke his own school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.13, to place fourth. Baugher is just .03 seconds away from qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference meet.
For the Lady Barons, Kaitlyn Hoffman broke the school record in the 400 meter dash with a personal best time of 1:02.83. Only seconds behind was sophomore runner Emma Lipniki with another personal best of 1:04.07.
FUS runners Katherin Molidor ,Kristin Mack, and Jessica LeClerc also achieved personal records in the 1500 meter run and 100 meter dash with times of 6:19.90, 6:07.18, and 14.96 respectively.
"Jesseica LeClerc, by her own standard, was incredible," Oliver said. "At the beginning of the season, I thought she came out to run for fun, but her competitive spirit is awesome."
Oliver added that LeClerc's performance reflected the team's progression as a whole throughout the season.
"If you look back at all of the meets from the beginning of the season to the end of the season, it seems like every week we have pr's," Oliver said. "The plan that we laid in front of ourselves really turned out the way it was supposed to be, and it worked because of the work ethic of this team."
Overall, Oliver said the meet and season were a success for his team.
"Nobody has ever worked as hard as this team, and today I couldn't ask for a better end to the season," Oliver said.
