Lady Barons Lack Consistency in Loss

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio—The Franciscan University women's soccer team couldn't quite pull it together in a constant downpour of rain as they lost to Washington and Jefferson College 4-0. The Lady Barons struggled to secure a good flow in the first half but by the end of the second they played like the team their fans are used to seeing.

"It's tough when the last 25 minutes is the only part of the game that you look like the team that you are," head coach Clare McBane said. "I think it was difficult for the girls because they could see that this game didn't look like all the others. They could see it and they couldn't quite fix it."

Washington and Jefferson dominated the start by keeping control of the flow of the game. They broke down Franciscan's defensive line and invaded Franciscan's goal with powerful shots time after time.

"Washington and Jefferson is a great team and we've never beat them before but it shouldn't have been a 4-0 game," McBane said. "Their talent at breaking our defensive line is what cost us so many goals."

Although the Lady Baron team struggled at first to get the game moving in their favor, by the end of the second half they looked like a different team. They were able to bring more energy and determination to the offense. The shift in energy was evident in Katie Roemer's ability to get multiple shots on goal through the tough Presidents defensive line.

"Katie Roemer showed up to play today," said McBane. "One of the problems we had in the first half was that we just weren't swinging the ball well and once we started doing that and finding her she was able to make some pretty significant plays down the line towards their goal."

In Franciscan's goal goalkeeper Mallory Garthwaite continued to step up for her team and guard the net. Even though at first glance the final score doesn't show it she made sure that Washington and Jefferson had to fight to get their shots through her.

McBane was proud of the way her team fixed the way they were playing in the end. She plans to move her team forward from this game and take it as a lesson and learn how to correct their mistakes so that they are able to play the whole game how they did in the last minutes of this game.

The Lady Barons get back out on the field again on Sept. 25 at 4p.m. against Geneva College.
