Box Score After only an hour and five minutes of play, sophomore middle hitter Clare Prezzia lined up to serve the final volley for her Lady Barons Volleyball team. The volley ended in an error against Penn St.–Beaver summing up the entire match. FUS dominated the Lions with a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-10, 25-12).
Franciscan scored in bunches, rattling off five to seven points at a time before letting the Lions score. The victory not only improves the Lady Barons record but also gives them confidence as they prepare for Allegheny Conference play starting Sept 28 against Penn State Berhend.
"We needed a win," Head Coach Kelly Herrmann said. "We needed to just relax and feel good about ourselves."
There were many reasons for the Lady Barons to feel confident. After playing a strong first game, FUS let their bench players come in and get some valuable minutes in preparation for conference play.
"All of our subs work so hard every day and put in a lot of time in on their own," Herrmann said. "Obviously in a match like this we want to work hard to get all of the kinks out before Saturday but at the same time we want to reward some of those girls who have been working hard."
One of those players was Prezzia who subbed in for freshman middle hitter Ana Tolkach at the very end of the match to finish off Penn St-Beaver.
"She is a sub that we will use a lot off the bench in the back row," Herrmann said. "The girls know the objective is winning. All of our girls really want to play and that is good. I don't want them happy to sit on the bench."
Junior Right Hitter Jackie Zucco also came off the bench for extended minutes in preparation for Saturday. She ended the day with three kills, five assists, and zero errors. Playing off the right side she roamed the whole court and showed yet again her value to her team.
"She played so well tonight," Herrmann said. "She is so reliable and it's nice to have her ready to go at all times."
Sophomore Dani Link led her team on offense with eight kills. Defensively, sophomore Outside Hitter Christina Lawrence led FUS with 11 digs and freshman Jennifer Pagano accumulated 10 digs of her own.
"We are excited to grab a win and practice our skills for our conference play," Herrmann said.
The Lady Barons AMCC record will determine what their post season seeding will be and will be the focus of the regular season for Herrmann and her squad. The Lady Barons will kick off conference play at an AMCC quad match against Penn State Behrend and Medaille College on Saturday Sept 28.
