Box Score BETHANY, W.V.— The Lady Baron's soccer team secured a 2-1 win against non-conference opponent Bethany College on Wednesday after winning their home opener four days prior. By keeping possession of the ball for most of the game, peppering Bethany's goalie with shots, and using their defense to limit Bethany's counterattack, the Lady Barons were able to maintain their winning record of 2-0.
"We had many shooting opportunities but in the end the score didn't reflect how well the girls were playing to goal," head coach Clare McBane said, "and our defense did an excellent job minimizing threats against us."
Both of the goals the Lady Barons finished were scored after another shot had been attempted. Jordan Byrley made the first goal, assisted by Ashley Ruttencutter. Katie Roemer made the second goal off an assist from Hannah Cooke. The adjustments, initiated last game, gave Roemer more opportunities to put forth an aggressive approach to the game.
"Katie's always been a strong player on the field," McBane said, "and her presence has always been known on the outside wing when it comes to distributing the ball but this season and especially this game she's started to show up in goal scoring ways."
On the defensive end the Lady Barons kept the threat from Bethany to a minimum. Junior goalkeeper Mallory Garthwaite kept the team secure with her saves of the few shots the defense let through. Bethany's one goal was off a penalty kick, Garthwaite dove to save it but it snuck past her into the back corner.
"Even though Mallory got scored on she still played a fantastic game and we probably would not have won without her efforts," McBane said.
With the whole team working together they were able to secure this win but they were still missing a key presence on the field. Junior captain Julia Cocozza was injured in the home opener and was not able to contribute on the field to this game.
"Control of the ball in the center of the field was definitely hurt without Julia's presence," McBane said. "To be playing without a captain is a big deal and the girls definitely had to work harder but they showed up and made it happen even without a very key player."
The Lady Barons hope to continue their winning streak at home on September 8 with the game against St. Vincent College starting at 2pm.
