Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Errors and inconsistent play cost the Lady Baron volleyball team in their match against Oberlin College (25-27, 21-25, 21-25) at the La Roche College Volleyball Invitational.
It was a hard night for the Lady Barons who had 17 hitting errors and 10 serving errors in their loss. FUS was up in their first game but let the lead slipped away as they let up extra points. It was the same story in the final game as Franciscan gave up the final four points losing a 21-17 lead and ultimately dropping the match.
In a game that mirrored their home opener against Wooster, Franciscan gassed themselves trying to come up from large deficits and could not finish off their opponent.
"Errors killed us today," head coach Kelly Herrmann said. "In any other sport, turnovers do not necessarily mean your opponent will score. That is the case in volleyball, so managing your mistakes is the most crucial part of the game."
Finding the balance for their young team has become a priority for the Lady Barons, who focused on scoring through many different players as opposed to last season's successful team that ran the majority of their offense through Senior Captain Anna Cain.
"We have a lot of girls who can start at many different positions," Herrmann said. "We are trying to figure out their role and responsibilities and so are they."
Individually, freshman Jennifer Pagano had six kills and sophomore Dani Link had five. On the defensive side of the match, sophomore Sam Kelly had 21 digs and sophomore Christina Lawrence contributed with 17 digs of her own.
The Lady Barons have made it a priority to play a tough schedule in hopes of motivating their team to play to their competition.
"We want to play hard teams. We want to battle and we want a challenge," Herrmann said. "We would rather play well against a good team and lose then a bad team and win. It will help us as we get ready for conference play later in the season."
Franciscan looks to put this match behind them as they focus on playing another tough opponent at Carlow. This will serve as a rematch after last weeks tournament in which the Lady Barons lost to Carlow in three games. The match is scheduled for Sept 7.
