Long-Range Shooting Gives Barons First NCAA Win Streak

Box Score

ALFRED, Ny. – Hot shooting from behind the three-point arc and limiting mistakes gave the Barons their second straight victory with a 64-59 win over Alfred State University.

The Barons made 14 of 30 three-pointers and shot 45 percent from the field overall.

"Guys were shot-ready, and we were able to find our shooters," head coach John Lamanna said in regards to why his team shot so well.

Making three of the team's 14 threes was senior guard Moses Sullivan, who led the team with 19 points. Of those 19, 16 came in the second half, helping Franciscan hold on to their 33-25 first-half lead after the team's shooting cooled off in the second half.

"He was just being aggressive and was able to find his spots in the gaps of their defense, and he was able to convert," Lamanna said.

The Barons jumped out to an early 17-10 lead with five three-pointers and a couple of free throws. Alfred State came out running a zone on defense against the Barons, which left the three-point arc open whenever the defense collapsed, leaving open shots for the Barons' shooters.

The hottest of those shooters was freshman guard Jonas McCraig who had 12 points on four of six three-point attempts in the first half. McCraig finished as the team's third player to score in double-digits with fifteen points.

"We were able to disperse the ball well and find the guys who were open," Lamanna said.

Sophomore point guard Jacob Divens was the other leading scorer for the Baron's adding 11 points and four assists in the first half, helping the Barons to come out of the half ahead by 33-25.

The second half became a matter of defense as Alfred State fought to bring the game closer. The Barons' defense kept the lead in part by limiting Alfred State to under 40 percent shooting during the game.

"Our on-the-ball defense and our defensive rotations were better, which led to the lower field-goal percentage," Lamanna said.

Alfred State never got closer than 3 points as Sullivan's 16 points, and 7 more points and 3 more assists from Divens, led the Barons to the win.

Both the score and overall flow of the game was almost a carbon copy of Franciscan's previous contest, a 63-59 win over Geneva College on November 22. The two games give Franciscan a 2-2 record, their best start since becoming full NCAA members in 2011, and their first back-to-back wins that time.

The Barons will try to continue that streak at Mt. Aloysius College on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
