Box Score HAMBURG, N.Y. – Six three-pointers in the first half helped to establish the Lady Barons in their second consecutive win of the season, beating conference opponent Hilbert College 68-58. The Lady Barons, now 2-1 in the conference, are tied for second place early in the season.
"I thought our girls responded well to a tough week," head women's basketball coach Suzy Delaney said. "Finals ended on Friday, and coming to Hilbert and getting the win is a great way to end that week."
Freshman guard Sarah Schriner opened the scoring for the Lady Barons with a three-pointer and sank two others early in the first half, giving the team the scoring boost that was needed to carry them throughout the entire game. Schriner finished tied for top scorer, with 15 points.
"Our first half offense worked hard and produced a lot of good looks at the basket," Delaney said. "We weren't taking that many three-point shots, but the looks that we got, we just nailed them in the first half. Schriner sinking back-to-back threes definitely gave us a huge lift."
Sophomore guard Iliana Gonzales also had a strong overall performance as the team's other leading scorer, with 15 points, also adding nine rebounds and four steals.
"Iliana helped quite a bit in the second half when playing with the lead," Delaney said. "I was impressed by her performance."
The Lady Barons also did a good job anticipating Hilbert's offense, what they wanted to do, as seen with a season-high 11 steals on the night. The steals were a result of good defense and good positioning.
"The key of the game was our half-court defense," Delaney said. "They were getting in the passing lanes, creating steals and helping our offense to get going."
Delaney also said that the team got great contribution off the bench, with sophomore guard/forward Katie Rhodes finishing as the team's second leading scorer with 14 points. Another sophomore forward, Johanna Roach, was able to come off the bench and sink a critical three-pointer in the second half.
The Lady Barons will only play two more games in 2014, with a majority of their conference schedule being played after the winter break.
"We are excited to wrap up our first semester on Monday night against a tough non-conference opponent at the College of Wooster," Delaney said.
The Lady Barons will try to continue their winning streak at home against Wooster on December 15 at 6 pm.
