Box Score BUFFALO , N.Y.—With flawless second-half foul shot percentage and a career night score of 32 points, Moses Sullivan led the Franciscan men's basketball team to their first conference victory on the road, defeating D'Youville college 78-66.
The Barons led from the buzzer, only faltering for a few minutes in the second half, when D'Youville narrowed the gap to a one-point lead, which FUS quickly recovered thanks to four free throws and a three-point shot by Sullivan.
The Baron guard's offensive presence continued to spur the team on to a 92.8 percent foul shot accuracy in the final two and a half minutes of the game, during which the Barons were 13-14 from the line, Sullivan 10-10.
"D'Youville made a great push in the second half, but we were able to withstand it and make a response which put us over the top," head coach John Lamanna said. "In very close games, foul shooting is so critical and we've had times this season where we haven't been successful at the foul line when we needed to be. That was the difference in the game tonight."
Besides his 32 points, Sullivan finished 89 percent (17-19) from the line and contributed 11 rebounds. Lamanna said that the guard really took control of the game.
"It was great." Lamanna said. "Moses put forth very good effort and really responded well in the second half."
Sullivan was accompanied by sophomore guards Christian Duke and Daniel Kleinschnitz who added 11 and 10 points respectively. Duke also had nine rebounds and shot 75 percent from the three-point line.
Lamanna added that the entire game was a team effort, particularly in the critical minutes of the second half when the Barons pulled ahead for the win.
"We had a stint there where things weren't going very well for us, we had multiple turnovers back to back, and they were scoring really easily." Lamanna said. "Then the guys were able to collect themselves. They took it upon themselves to increase their intensity, which was huge because good things started happening."
The Baron coach attributed much of the win to the team's ability to dominate defensively, holding D'Youville to a mere 36.4 shooting percentage from the field.
"We did a better job forcing contested shots, we rotated better, and we were able to guard the ball better tonight. Our defensive presence was significantly improved," Lamanna said.
With the highest number of wins since becoming a full NCAA member three years ago, four AMCC conference wins and five overall, the Barons look to climb ever higher in their upcoming non-conference game against Grove City.
"We're going to treat Grove City just like it's a conference game and hopefully try to continue our winning streak," Lamanna said.
The Grove City home game will take place Wednesday, February 5 at 6pm.
