Barons Lose to Medaille Despite Game Highs

Box Score

ROCHESTER N.Y.—The FUS men's basketball team struggled to convert shooting opportunities in an 86-71 loss to Medaille College on the road.

The first half of the game posed offensive challenges for the Barons, as shot after shot bounced off the rim or rolled in and out. This put them behind the Mavericks 41-27 at the half, making it difficult to make a comeback despite a 17-point increase in scoring in the second half.

"We had great looks today," head coach John Lamanna said. "The ball just went in and out. Sometimes there's a lid on the basket."

Despite frustration at the basket, Baron guards sophomore Daniel Kleinschnitz and junior Justin Horstman shared the game high score with Jammal Coleman of Medaille with 17 points. The FUS guards also had 4 rebounds apiece.

Also making an impact on the Barons' performance were post player Joseph Rine, who had a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, and sophomore guard Timmy Schenk who scored nine points and had eight rebounds.

Lamanna recognized the standouts as contributing significantly to the Barons' second half performance but wished there had been more widespread success.

"Typically we're more balanced," he said. "A more balanced pack leads to better offensive production than if it comes from a few areas."

Lamanna added that while the team opened up opportunities for a turnaround, they were unable to find enough consistency in their shooting. This was in direct contrast to the Barons' last game against Medaille in which they returned from an 11-point deficit to win by one.

"We need to keep moving forward in terms of how competitive we are and how hard we fight and see if we can bounce back," Lamanna said.

Now 5-11 for conference games and ranked eighth in the AMCC, the Barons have just three games to finish out the season. The first of the three will take place at home on Wednesday, February 19 at 6pm.

"We play better at home than we do on the road and we end the season with home games, "Lamanna said. "Our goal is to see what we can do with the rest of the year."
