Box Score BETHANY, PA- After a loose first half the young Baron Lacrosse team pulled themselves together for an aggressive second half but lost to Alma College 15-9.
Franciscan kept pace with the Scots through a low scoring first quarter but struggled to keep it together in the next 15 minutes.
A rough second quarter the Barons only got off 4 shots to Alma's 14 and the results showed on the scoreboard. After a 1-1 first quarter the Baron's went into halftime down 9-2.
"Right now Coach Hoover and I are working on finding the right team chemistry," Head Coach Pete Rosaschi said. "The difficult part with a small team is that we just don't have the options, especially with nine guys who are brand new. We don't have the finer points of the game which guys develop after years and years of playing."
After an intense half time the Barons came out more aggressive and more focused. Offensively they found their rhythm and were able work the ball around, penetrate the defense, and find open shooters. The smarter team play resulted in less turnovers from the Barons and with better clears and a working offense the Barons improved the areas they struggled with earlier.
While game ended in favor of the Scots 15-8, Rosaschi said the 7-6 second half score was a big momentum boost for the young team.
"For me when I look at the second half our guys didn't quit and they stayed strong," Rosaschi said. "I'm very happy with the second half. The effort was there, but there has to be better focus and better execution."
Freshman attack Luke Gilman ran the FUS offense efficiently in the second half and contributed to all but one of Franciscan's scores, with three goals and four assists. Three of those assists found sophomore attack Ryan Zbikowki who finished with three goals.
Freshman goalie Jonah Soucy had another strong game with fifteen saves and a save percentage around 50 percent.
The Barons head out to face St. Vincent College this Tuesday March 18, starting at 3:30 p.m.
