Box Score ALTOONA, P.a.—The Franciscan men's tennis team won its second conference match of the season in a sweep of Penn State- Altoona with a final of 9-0.
"We didn't really know what to expect from Altoona this year but it went really well," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "Our players all went in and played really strong and came out with a pretty quick win."
The Barons' strong suit has not typically been its doubles play, but Ellis said he thinks this year will be different. The doubles teams all played consistent matches out scoring Altoona three matches in a row.
No. 1 doubles, Paul Jarzynka and Zack Quiza won 8-1; No. 2 doubles, David Freytag and Luke Merry won 8-2; and No. 3 doubles Joe Staniszewski and Rob Butcher secured a 8-2 win as well.
"Our 1 through 3 doubles line up is really solid and everyone is playing well together right now," Ellis said "Going into singles after being up 3-0 helps a ton and so our goal is to continue work on doubles and let that roll us into victory."
With confidence in their standings, the Barons dove right into singles play. In the No. 1 singles position senior team captain Jarzynka didn't give his opponent a chance to find a rhythm shutting him out with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
The teams other senior, Luke Merry also played a solid match in the No.4 singles spot defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-1.
"Paul and Luke, our two seniors, are the ones to watch this year because they want to go out big," Ellis said. "They both had good quick matches today."
The team goes on to play its second match in 24 hours at Mount Union College on Saturday March 22 set to begin at 1p.m. In the fall season the Barons lost 5-4 to Union so Ellis expects it to be a grueling match.
