Box Score ALTOONA, Pa.— The Franciscan University men's tennis team was in control of its match against conference opponent Mount Aloysius College from start to finish, sweeping the Mounties with a 9-0 victory.
"Today was pretty quick," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "They played well and really had to stay mentally tough and they did."
Setting the tone with good chemistry and mental toughness were all three doubles teams as they flew threw their matches. Ellis said he was pleased with how well the doubles teams continue to work together.
Both No. 1 doubles, Paul Jarzynka and Zachary Quiza, and No. 2 doubles, Luke Merry and David Freytag, shut out their opponents with 8-0 wins. No. 3 doubles, Joseph Staniszewski and Robert Butcher, also came out on top winning 8-1.
"It was a good match for us today," senior team captain Jarzynka said. "We really went in there and played well. I think the thing is to focus from game to game on different things to work on."
Pulling together all the hard work on different aspects of their games paid off as the Barons only gave up a total of five games in singles play with no player giving up more than two.
From No. 1 to No. 6 singles the team displayed depth and resilience as Jarzynka went 6-0, 6-0; Quiza, 6-1, 6-1; Freytag 6-0, 6-1; Merry 6-0, 6-1; Butcher 6-0, 6-1; and Staniszewski 6-0,6-0.
"We're really motivated and excited to get on the court and go undefeated in conference again," Jarzynka said.
With another conference win the team is now 3-0 in the AMCC and 3-7 on their overall season as they look on to the rest of the season.
"We have our first home match on Tuesday that we're excited for that," Ellis said.
The Barons next game is that home match on Tuesday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m. against non-conference opponent Bethany College.
