Lady Barons Lose Despite Improved Pitching

GRENNSBURG, Pa. – Lady Baron softball lost to conference foe Pitt. - Greensburg 12-0 and 9-1 despite continued improvement from pitcher Eloise Rover and hitting from veterans Katrina Fabian and Rosemary Cassidy.

Ultimately it was Franciscan's inability to bring home base runners that may have cost them the game, ending an inning with the bases loaded once in each game.

"We batted well but we left a lot of runners on base," head coach Jen Parker said. "Leaving the bases loaded twice is just something we can't do. We're not going to win games if we leave the bases loaded."

A few aspects of the Lady Baron's game did move closer to a winning level, including, once again, the pitching of sophomore Eloise Rover who continues to pitch cleaner, more efficient games with each outing. Against the Bobcats, Rover didn't walk any batters for the first time this season, striking out two and causing seven Greensburg batters to fly-out.

"She pitched a really solid game," Parker said. "Honestly now the work has got to be with our fielders."

Parker said that while her team fielded with less errors than in previous games that they failed to convert on a number of plays that should have been outs.

Part of Franciscan's fielding struggles came from a reshuffling of the defensive positions due to a few missing players. That combined with the team's general inexperience, just six returning players, made the game an uphill battle.

"We do have a relatively young team and we have some girls learning the basics of it," Parker said. "It's different coming from a high school level to a college level. But they did a much better job of communicating with each other tonight."

It may not have shown in the final score but not only did Franciscan communicated better defensively they also demonstrated more confidence offensively; something Parker has been looking for all season.

"Nobody went down looking this time which was great," Parker said. "They really were swinging the bat this time."

The Lady Baron's most successful hitters were two of their most experienced players, junior Katrina Fabian and senior Rosemary Cassidy. The two combined went 4 for5 from the plate in game two with Fabian's RBI bring Cassidy in for the team's only run of the day.

This game mark the end of eight consecutive road games for FUS as they come back home to play Pitt. – Bradford on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
