Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio– Franciscan University men's tennis
captain, Paul Jarzynka was honored as ECAC and AMCC Player of the
Week for the week of April 6th.
Jarzynka led the Barons in shut out play in the no. 1 spot for
both singles and doubles. In matches against Bethany, Pitt.
Bradford, and Pitt Greensburg, the senior dominated competition and
finished the week nearly undefeated, going 26-1 in three
matches.
Against Bradford, Jarzynka and his no. 1 doubled partner, Zach
Quiza shut out their opponents 8-0. In singles competition,
Jarzynka defeated Bradford's No. 1 player 8-3. Due to the cold and
wind, the singles matches were plated as eight game pro sets,
upping the pressure with shorter matches.
In doubles against Pitt. Greensburg, Jarzynka's team went 8-1
and in singles he went 6-4, 6-4, a big contributor to Franciscan's
sweep.
"Paul didn't let him get any rhythm at all," Head coach Jeremy
Ellis said about Jarzynka's singles play. "He served and volleyed
very well. "
These matches reflected the momentum that Jarzynka had earlier
in the week at the tennis home opener against Bethany College.
Again facing windy conditions, Jarzynka pulled through in no. 1
doubles, beating his opponent 8-3.
"We swept doubles and that is what I want to continue to do the
rest of the year," Ellis said. "The more they play together the
more chemistry they're going to have."
In singles, Jarzynka again swept his opponent from Bethany,
winning 6-0, 6-0, finishing his week one game shy of a perfect
record, 26-1.
Tennis next plays on Friday, April 11 at Allegheny College.
