NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.– The Franciscan University
track and field program continued toward greatness in their
successful day of running and field events at the Westminster
Invitational.
"Everybody should be happy," head coach Vince Oliver said. "What
a day this program had today. Everybody gavetoday."
Some of the major contributions came from various team members
across both the men's and women's sides.
After setting a new personal record in last week's shot put, Brian
Tullier was unable to practice much of the week due to injury.
He still came out and performed well in the day's meet, throwing
12.60m and placing 15th.
Elena
Luke ran a college pr in the 800 with a time of
2:32.29. Hannah
Cooke also had notable results, running the 200m dash in
29.91.
Allison
Huelseman and Jane
Crosby stood out on the women's team for their great runs
of the day. Huelsemancame in 10th in the 1500 with a time of
5:18.99.
"Allison cut another six seconds off in her 1500 and was ran
much better than the last," Oliver said. "She keeps doing great.
She is one of those people that we keep looking at and we feed off
of that enthusiasm and work ethic."
Crosby also had a successful day, running her 800 in 2:26.21 and
placing third.
"I cannot not mention Jane Crosby," Oliver said. "We have been
training all season long. She has been an 800 runner all her life
and this season she dropped down to the 400 and we sort of took a
walk on the wild side today by letting her run on the 8 but boy did
she come through."
As for the men, James Marra and
David
Willems ran noteworthy races for their team. Marra placed
fourth in the 800, running a 2:01.81.
"There's got to be a new confidence that exists in James's heart
because of his abilities," Oliver said. "He did fantastic today, he
really came out of his shell and let it all hang out. That is what
we have been striving for him to do and he had a great day
today."
David Willems also ran the 800, with a time of 2:15.41
"David did a fantastic job and had a fantastic effort today,"
Oliver said. "He continues to be the heartbeat of the team. His
effort just goes and goes and goes. He is not afraid to show it and
he is not afraid to express it. I thank him for his effort and
enthusiasm because the team feeds off of him."
With two more regular meets of the season, Oliver is pleased
with the team's improvements and plans for it to continue.
"It was a complete team effort," Oliver said. "I want them to be
happy with themselves, but not satisfied. There is more work to do.
There is a couple weeks left in the season and there is still
opportunity to everybody. We are going to get after it and we are
going to finish this season strong."
The Barons will compete next at Penn
State- Behrend track and field meet on April 19.
