Box Score 2 BUFFALO, Ny. —The Lady Barons continue to struggle on the road, falling in both games to D'Youville College, 8-0 and 9-0. The Franciscan did see improvements on the offensive side but were unable to translate hits into runs.
Head coach Jen Parker said that while her team found the aggressive mindset in the batters box that she's wanted all year, that her team's problems with leaving runners on base persisted.
"I was happy that they were making better contact with the ball in the second game," Coach Parker said. "But you can get all the hits in the world; if you're not bringing those runners in, it doesn't do any good for us."
Approaching this matchup, Parker said that she was expecting a good hitting performance from her girls but that they are still struggling to read those expectations.
"I was expecting bigger hits out of our batters," Parker said. "Our girls are capable of so much more offensively than they are showing right now.
A big part of this frustration, Parker said, is attributed to confidence. Already dealing with a lack of numbers on the roster, the Lady Barons went into the game missing some valuable players.
The Barons found themselves with only two out of their usual four pitchers, and were missing their starting shortstop, Michele Volk. This gave other players the opportunity to step up and while the team as a whole struggled, freshman Theresa Recznik came and filled in admirably at shortstop role.
"She did a heck of a job," Parker said.
The Lady Barons also dealt with an injury in the right field during the game, one that presented problems for FUS. Regardless of the injuries and missing players, Parker said the team's defense needs to get better.
"We've got to amp up our defense," Parker said. "We've got to make some adjustments to compensate for the injury that we have in right field."
The Lady Barons look to their home matchup versus Medaille College, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on April 13 to fix some some of their recent struggles.
