Staniszewski and Quiza Lead Baron Tennis in Roller Coaster Match

Box Score

OBERLIN, Ohio —The Baron tennis team competed in an eventful match against Oberlin College with solid play from all sides that ended in a 7-2 Baron loss.

"Oh man that was a match," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "We lost 7-2 but we were very close to winning it 5-4 at one point."

The doubles teams all lost to their opponents but the No. 1 doubles team of Paul Jarzynka and Zach Quiza kept the match close, almost pulling out the win but losing 7-9 in the end.

"Our No. 1 doubles played decent together," Ellis said. "We started the match going into singles 0-3 which makes it tough but about halfway in we had five matches on that could have went our way."

Jarzynka at No. 1, Quiza at No. 2, Luke Merry at No. 4 and Joseph Staniszewski at No. 6 all won the first set of their matches, putting the team in good position. David Freytag was also in a tight match in No. 4 singles.

"The guys were playing really well," Ellis said. "Going off of yesterday playing kind of tight and sluggish they came right out today and were playing great."

Only two of the five that were looking strong pulled out wins in the end. Staniszewski at No. 6 singles finished what he started winning 6-3, 6-2 against his opponent.

"Joe ended up pulling his out and that's a huge win for Joe," Ellis said. "He played great, in fact I think Joe is playing at the top of his game right now so I'm excited to see him continue."

Also playing at a high level was Quiza at No. 2 singles. Ellis said that once again Quiza played with unceasing consistency and won his match handily at 6-3, 6-1.

The closest match of the night was Merry's as he split his sets winning the first and losing the second but once it came time for the third set, the overall team match had been decided so he and his opponent played a match break.

"It was a roller coaster ride," Ellis said. "Luke was up 4-1 in the match break and then went down 9-4 and was up 10-9 at the match point and then lost 10-12."

Now the Barons move on to their third match in three days as they plan to play at home for their senior day on Sunday April 13 at 1:00 p.m. against conference opponent Penn State Behrend.

"We're feeling good, the guys are a little tired so hopefully they get rested tonight but we're excited," Ellis said. "It was Luke, Paul and Rob's last away match and it was a good one to go out on."
