Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio— Seniors Paul Jarzynka, Luke Merry and the FUS men's tennis team closed out their last home match of the season with a sweeping 9-0 win against Penn State Behrend.
After a tiring weekend of playing three matches in three days the Barons secured their undefeated status in conference play this season finishing out 6-0 against AMCC opponents.
"We went into singles 3-0 after winning all three doubles," Ellis said. "We started well and so that was good. Everyone played well and played as steady as they could in this kind of weather."
Despite the once again extremely windy conditions the Barons accomplished the team goal of staring out strong in doubles to set them up for the rest of the match. Jarzynka and Zachary Quiza and No. 1 doubles won 8-1 and Merry and David Freytag at No. 2 doubles won 8-2.
Ellis said Robert Butcher and Joseph Staniszewski played well at No. 3 doubles as they quickly swept through the match with skill, defeating their opponents 8-0.
"It's a good last match for Paul and Luke to go out on," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "It's been great having them on the team."
Jarzynka and Merry, the team's only seniors, both went out on their last home match with wins. The two were a part of the team freshman year when the team was only in its second year of existence.
"What they have been able to do these past four years will be remembered," Ellis said. "You couldn't have hand picked a better group of guys to start Franciscan tennis."
Merry finished out his regular season play for Franciscan with a solid shutout of his opponent winning 6-0, 6-0.
"Luke is very humble and competitive and a great guy to have around," Ellis said. "Paul's charisma and leadership have been the core of the team and has made this a huge success."
Four-year team captain, Jarzynka, finished out his regular season play with the Barons with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
"It hasn't really sunk in but it feels pretty good," Jarzynka said. "Dream big, that's my biggest thing, dream big and don't let anyone tell you can't achieve that dream."
Jarzynka has lived that motto during his time at Franciscan. In the fall of his freshman year, he put down a list of goals and he would say that about 90 percent of them have happened in the time he has dedicated to the team.
In that time the team has won two AMCC Championships and was the first Franciscan team to compete in an NCAA tournament.
"This being Paul's last home match is bittersweet because we can build from it but obviously it's his last time so it's sad but it's been a good year," Ellis said.
Now the team moves on to focus on preparing these next two weeks for the AMCC tournament that begins on April 26 in Erie, Pa. where Ellis and Jarzynka said they hope to vie to make the NCAA tournament again.
