BEREA, Ohio – The Franciscan University track and field program had another successful meet at Baldwin Wallace College's 2014 Sparky Adams Invitational, returning home with new personal records and a new school record.
"What do you say about a day like today?" head coach Vince Oliver said. "Because I don't know a single person that didn't give everything and get everything out of it. This is what we work toward. This is why we work the way that we do."
Coming into a competitive meet lacking a full roster due to injury and the holiday weekend, the Barons did not know what was in store for their team. They did know, however, that they were prepared to take on their respective events in order to finish the season's next-to-last regular meet strong.
Freshman Susanna Almedia did just that, setting a new school record in the women's 400m dash by running a 1:02.57 and placing sixth.
"We need to recognize Suki," Oliver said. "She has worked her tail off all season long. What she got today she earned and she deserved it. She is such a great example."
Almedia was not the only one to have success in the day's meet. The women's side also stood out with a strong performance by junior Allison Huelseman, who also placed sixth in her 1500m event with a time of 5:11.15.
"Allison keeps challenging herself and she keeps getting better and better," Oliver said. "She improved her time and it was amazing to see. Fantastic effort from Allison."
The men's efforts from the day resulted in several new PRs and a high finish in the 800m. Sophomore James Marra placed fifth in the 800, running a 2:00.6, a new personal record.
"James had a great effort," Oliver said. "He got boxed in early but he is so close to jumping right down below the two minute mark and once he gets it, it's just going to slide down. He did a great job in setting himself up for next week. It'll be a big week for James."
Sophomore Brian Tullier also ended the meet with a new PR, throwing a 12.7m in the shot put.
"Brian has gotten better every day since that PR day a few weeks ago, and today he did it again," Oliver said. "He continues to amaze me. He knows he hasn't done his best yet and that is going to happen. What a great PR out there today in a very competitive field."
Both Sam Ivkovich and Emmet Delaney had solid days of running with personal records in the 800m and 1500m events. Ivkovich ran a 2:15.66 and a 4:48.53, while Delaney ran a 2:22.74 and a 4:46.13 respectively.
"It was a great day for Sam Ivkovich," Oliver said. "Sam is moving forward. There are only better things in front of him. Emmett also had PRs. As a freshman, he has a lot of miles ahead of him but this is the way to do it. He sees that the hard work that you put in gets results out for you."
Lastly, junior David Willems ran his final 10k of the season. Although his performance was not a PR, he showed his skill as a runner and Oliver said he still had a great day. Willems placed eighth in the 10k, running a 36:53.8.
Oliver said that he has enjoyed watching Willems run the 10K and that Willems constantly gives 150 percent in all he does. Oliver went on to mention the inspiration that Bill Jones, an All-American runner who graduated in 2013, has been for the team.
"Bill Jones was an inspiration to all of us and I know that he was an inspiration to David," Oliver said. "He has big shoes to follow. Mr. Yellow Headband (Jones) is big, big shoes to follow. What David has done has been nothing less than phenomenal and I'm so proud to be his coach."
Oliver said his whole team came out today to produce these great results for the program. With one more meet to the regular season, the Barons plan to spend the week getting their legs ready for their best performances yet.
"The method of things that we are doing shows through again," Oliver said. "What an effort by everybody. I congratulate every one of them. We wrap up the day with a lot of success and a lot of celebrating."
FUS track and field competes next on April 26 at Penn State – Behrend.
