Kennedy's First Goal Wins Game for Lady Barons

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Back on the road after their first home game of the season and coming right off of a weekend 2-0 win, the Lady Barons earned another victory in a 2-1 win against the Thiel Tomcats. The Lady Barons played a controlled game, taking the time to perfect both technique and formation.

The team entered the game with specific offensive and defensive goals in mind, which head coach Clare McBane would lead to better soccer, regardless the result.

Defensively speaking, the focused was on keeping corners to a minimum to prevent possible scoring opportunities. The defense delivered.

"We had five corners and they didn't have any. So I'm proud of the defense for not giving up any corners," McBane said. "That was one of their goals."

Up top, the offense focused on scoring technique. In the previous Saturday's 2-0 win against Bethany College Franciscan won but didn't create as many good scoring chances as McBane would have liked. With that in mind, one of the goals moving forward was not only scoring, but creating plays focused on making and finding the second option. McBane said the corners showed her team improved on that goal.

"We had some phenomenal headers on our corners. We had two that went right over the cross bar, so the girls were definitely getting up and getting a touch on it," McBane said. "And then a lot of the corners was us trying to mix up the way that we attacked."

The first goal of the game came from senior forward Jordan Byerly, assisted by senior forward Ashley Ruttencutter. The play showcased the time test teamwork of from teammates who are in their third season together.

On the other hand, the winning goal, a free kick finished by senior forward Maura Kennedy in the seventy-eighth minute, showcased the team's commitment to growth in skill. This season is Kennedy's first year as a Lady Baron.

As the season progresses, the Lady Barons are preparing for their Thursday home game against Geneva College as well as the approach of conference games.

"We are still working on developing our chemistry to its fullest," McBane said. "We're looking to fix some of the small things from this game to make us even better and more prepared for conference play."

The Lady Barons will play Geneva on Thursday, September 18 at home.
