Lady Barons Outshoot Washington & Jefferson But Can't Score in Loss

Box Score

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Although the Lady Barons improved on last year's 4-0 loss against Washington and Jefferson College, WJC came out with the victory once again, this time pulling out with a 2-0 win. While the Lady Barons played a close game, shot after shot missed the net.

"We just couldn't get it to drop for us," head coach Clare McBane. "We hit in the low corners, we hit wide, hit right above the crossbar, we hit right in the keeper's hands."

In last Saturday's 1-1 overtime tie with Wesleyan University, the Lady Barons controlled the field, outshooting their opponents 23 to 9. Although today's game was more evenly matched, the Lady Barons still outshot their opponents 12-10. The problem was not possession.

Defending corner kicks, something the team struggled with earlier in the year, where the problem either with FUS keeping those chances to a minimum. Instead, both WJC goals came from quick passing in the penalty area around FUS defenders.

"The defense did well," McBane said. "Unfortunately, the few times they broke down resulted in goals, so they really need to work to make those opportunities less dangerous for us."

Although the team lost, McBane said she was impressed with the team's improvement from the first to second half. The stats agree. In the first half, the Lady Barons had just three shots on goal but tripled that effort with nine in the second half. Three of those shots on goal came from the team's leading scorer Julia Cocozza.

"We played much better in our second half than our first," McBane said. "I was really proud of the girls for making the correct adjustments and becoming a really serious threat on goal."

The team will look to turn more of their goal scoring opportunities into goals as they play their first conference game on the road at Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, September 27, at 1pm.
