Box Score BUFFALO, NY. – In a long match against the D'Youville College Spartans, the Lady Baron tennis team finally walked away with a 9-0 win in their first conference game. After a long bus ride, the team was eager to play with some changes in line-ups.
While Head Coach Jenna Lynch is currently on maternity leave, Interim Head Coach Maura Conant enjoyed watching the girls succeed in their matches.
"We bumped some people around to experiment and it definitely worked well for us at the end," Conant said.
Building off the energy from last match , freshman Anna O'Connor fought to her third win in no. 6 singles in as many matches, this time winning 6-0, 6-0. O'Connor credited the support of her teammates with her early success.
"We play well together and it is just so good," O'Connor said. "I really love the team and they have made my transition to the team so much easier."
O'Connor played alongside sophomore Ashley Veazey in no.1 doubles, winning 8-6. Still adjusting as partners, the pairing and the team struggled early but got better and better as the match went on.
"We started slow coming off the bus ride but everyone got it together. We are still adjusting to each other as a team so as the season goes that will get better," Veazey said. "We were in control and we took care of business."
Senior Alanna Murray won her first match this season at no. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. After winning her no. 2 doubles match alongside sophomore Claire Haddad 8-2, Murray was ready for her singles match and enjoyed a more aggressive style of play.
"It was a faster paced ball than the doubles which was nice to hit," Murray said. "It was a great match. It was great playing more aggressive balls."
The last match of the night belonged to sophomore Claire Haddad. Haddad won her no. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-2. Haddad carried energy from her previous match against Westminster College but also from playing alongside teammate Alanna Murray in no. 2 doubles.
"We started off strong and we had a nice put together win in doubles," Haddad said. "The energy playing doubles with Alanna and going straight into my doubles match was great."
Lady Barons tennis will next play the Medaille College Mavericks at 1 pm in Buffalo, New York on September 6.
