STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Lady Baron basketball was able to bounce back less than 23 hours after a tough conference loss, winning an important conference game against D'Youville College. The Lady Barons beat the Spartans 74-62 andmove back to .500 with a conference record of 3-3.

"I was proud of our girls effort coming out today and responding with a win against a really talented and well-coached D'Youville team," head women's basketball coach Suzy Delaney said.

After only shooting .349 percent in the loss to Penn St.-Behrend the previous day, the Lady Barons were able to create better looks with 16 team assists. The better ball movement led to a higher shooting percentage with FUS shooting 30-56 from the field. Senior forward Lacey Huck led the team effort with a season high 23 points and six rebounds.

"Lacey gave a senior captain performance today," Delaney said. "She played great, great defense and was able to finish on the offensive end."

Huck's defense help the Spartans leading scorer, who averages 17 points per game and 11 rebounds a game, to just 11 points and five rebounds.

The team's other veteran players also stood out as sophomore guard Iliana Gonzales finished as the team's second leading scorer with 18 points. Gonzales' play was also an improvement over the previous game as she had a colder night from the field against Behrend with only 10 points.

"Iliana had a great game at both ends of the court," Delaney said. "Her defense allowed us to extend the lead in the second half and it fed her offense."

Both Huck and Gonzales were able to match their offensive production with excellent defensive play, combining to hold D'Youville's three leading scorers to point totals below their season averages.

On the other side, D'Youville was able to hold Franciscan's second leading scorer freshman guard Sarah Schriner to only seven points, but what was more impressive is what she did not do in the game – turn the ball over.

"We got excellent point guard play from Sarah against a difficult zone defense with a zero turnover effort," Delaney said.

Another freshman player was able to have a large impact in this game. Forward Bernadette Roach played her best game of her young career. Roach finished with eight points and six rebounds while playing days after the passing of her grandmother.

"Today, Bernadette gave her best effort of the season with some really opportune offense and excellent defense and rebounding," Delaney said.

The Lady Barons look to match their strong team effort at home against Penn St.-Altoona January 14 at 6 pm.
