Lady Barons Beat Medaille; Move to Fifth in AMCC

Box Score

BUFFALO, New York - The Lady Barons successfully turned a solid defensive performance into a 67-55 win over the Medaille Mavericks.  Freshman Sarah Schriner worked well with junior guard Monica Dawyot and senior forward Lacey Huck, building a very competitive game.

"Today we had a great team effort," Head Coach Suzy Delaney said.  "As a coaching staff, we challenged the team to perform the way we know they are capable of on the defensive end, and I'm just so proud of that performance."

Freshman guard Sarah Shriner matched senior legend Lacy Huck's 55.6%  field goal percentage, Schriner scored 29 points, almost half the team points.

"Sarah Schriner played an excellent game from opening to the close of the game," said Head Coach Suzy Delaney.  "She had a difficult matchup today, and I thought she really rose to the occasion."

The Lady Barons have been working on their mental game, emphasizing perseverance from start to finish.  This mindset paid off in today's win.  While the Lady Barons maintained a solid lead during the first half, the second half proved a tougher challenge.

With 15:22 minutes left, Medaille tied the game 33-33, the culmination of the Mavericks hard fight for the game coming out of halftime.  That 46 second tie was the only chance the Lady Barons gave the Mavericks of coming close to a lead.

After the Mavericks tie point, the Lady Barons responded immediately with a jump shot from Schriner and effectively taking the lead back for the rest of the game.

Huck was also a key player for fighting back from the tie.

"In the second half, Lacey had some great veteran plays on offense that pushed us to the finish line, along with great defensive effort," Delaney said.  "It is great to know that we can count on her to make a difficult basket late in the game."

Huck was joined by Dawyot, who set up plays, and whose consistently excellent game contributed the necessary support for Huck and Schriner's points.

"Monica Dawyot had an excellent all-around game - defense, rebounding, scoring and dishing out assists," Delaney said.

Now fifth in the AMCC, the Lady Barons will next play at La Roche college at 6pm on Monday, January 19th.
