Second-Half Fire Not Enough in Lady Baron's Loss to Greensburg

Box Score

A cold shooting night matched the temperature outside as the Lady Barons had their four-game winning streak snapped on the road against conference opponent Pitt.-Greensburg 69-48.

Franciscan is now tied with Pitt-Greensburg for a conference record of 2-2.

"Tonight against Pitt.-Greensburg, we had the chance to see a mature, well-coached team and how they approach a conference game," head women's basketball coach Suzy Delaney said. "It was a good lesson for us from the opening tip. We've got a lot of things to work on, but there was some fight in our team tonight at the end that I appreciate. Bringing that level of intensity from the opening whistle is where we need to get."

The Lady Barons found themselves in a hole early in the game, down 12-1 after the first eight minutes. Then freshman guard Sarah Schriner was able to jumpstart an 11-0 run with two quick layups on the way to tying the game at 12. Schriner finished as the team's second leading scorer on the night with 13 points.

Leading the team's offense in the second half was senior forward Lacey Huck, who had 15 of her 21 points in the half. The team overall had a better offensive performance in the second half, improving on a .179 shooting percentage in the first half to finish the night shooting .267 from the field.

"Lacey played hard tonight in a game where we needed seniors," Delaney said. "She brought the right toughness on offense and did all she could to try to keep us in the game."

Also displaying a lot of leadership on the court was junior guard Monica Dawyot who had been sidelined for the first few games due to an injury. Dawyot played a solid 23 minutes for the Lady Barons in this game, showing what kind of impact she can have when she is healthy by finishing with five points and three rebounds.

"Monica continues to show her leadership when given a chance," Delaney said. "Tonight, she took it upon herself to be a vocal leader on defense and that is something we'll need from her all season."

Unfortunately, the Lady Barons could not find an answer to both the offense and the defense of the Bobcats, led by the career night of senior Kayla Dames who finished with a double-double of 19 points and 18 rebounds.

With their last home game postponed, the Lady Barons look forward to returning to their home court for the next three games after almost an entire calendar month on the road. Their next game has an added significance as the team will remember the late Hank Kuzma and his vast contributions to Franciscan athletics

"We are excited to get back to work tomorrow and prepare for our Kuzma Day matchup with Penn St.-Behrend," Delaney said.

The Lady Barons will take on Penn St.-Behrend at home on January 10th at 2 pm.
