Dombrowski Reaches New Career High In Loss

Box Score

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Full court pressure and offensive struggles in the first half solidified the Baron basketball team's 95-60 point loss to the University of Pitt-Greensburg. Despite team woes, freshman John Paul Dombrowski scored a career high of 17 points.

The Barons fell behind early to conference opponent Greensburg, struggling to break through the full court press to set up their offense. Meanwhile, Greensburg began the night hot from the three-point line, sinking eight long-range shots for a 23 point lead by halftime.

The margin only widened with a slow start to the second half for FUS, but things started to click in the last nine minutes of the game with the Barons scoring a quick twenty points.

The effort came too late in a game that head coach John Lamanna said came down to dealing with offensive pressure.

"We had severe issues trying to get the ball past the press," Lamanna said. "This is nothing new for us. It's something with which we've struggled and have been trying to figure out. We have gotten better with it, but this game did not go well for us."

A bright spot in the Baron lineup was Dombrowski, who scored 11 points in the first half during otherwise dry scoring spells for the team as a whole. The freshman added another six points after the half to surpass his previous high of 13. He also brought down seven rebounds, leading the team in both categories.

"John Paul had a good night for us," Lamanna said. "It's definitely positive that JP is constantly improving. "

The team's next highest scorer was freshman guard Keoni Sablan with eight points and three rebounds.

As the team transitions out of winter break and into the second half of their season, Lamanna said they need to refocus their efforts to become a cohesive unit.

"We really took a step back tonight in terms of our growth," Lamanna said. "We need to look at this game, re-evaluate, and try to move forward."

With top-conference opponent Penn St.-Behrend next in their lineup, Lamanna said the team will continue efforts to solidify more consistent play.

"We're really not looking so much at preparing for Behrend as working on trying to improve our own progress," Lamanna said. "We're trying to stay focused in on ourselves rather than our opponent."

The Barons will face Behrend at home for the seventh annual Hank Kuzma Day on January 10 at 4pm.
