FAIRMONT, W. Va. - The Franciscan University rugby team took home a close one in its first away game against the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in a 15-10 victory.
The game was close throughout from the opening whistle to the closing one. The Falcons fought hard, living up to their name, but they just could not overcome the physical advantage of the Baron pack.
"This game was won in the pack," said Baron head coach Chris Courtnell. "They controlled the game physically, especially in the first half. The scrums were dominant. The lineouts were solid and our forwards were really clearing out the rucks. That's what won it for us tonight."
Fairmont stayed strong under the Baron pressure and played all the way up to the final whistle. The effort was just short of being able to overcome the Baron lead as they lost by just five points.
"Give Fairmont their dues," said Courtnell. "They played well and gave us a scare nearly stealing it from us at the end but we were able to hold them off."
Courtnell was pleased with the overall performance down the stretch, especially that of the freshman he named man of the match, Patrick Rolwes. This was Rolwes' first start and he was one of the try scorers for the Barons tonight.
Franciscan returns to the pitch next Saturday, October 10 as the Barons travel to Geneva for 1:00 pm game.
