Franciscan runners compete against top-ranked teams

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Franciscan University men's and women's cross country teams ran against tough competition in the Intra-Regional Rumble meet Saturday morning. The men's team came in 25th out of 32 teams while the women's team took 27th out of 29 teams.

"The teams did really well," Coach Kuebler commented. "There were a lot of teams there that are ranked in the top-20 in the nation for Division III, so that really pushed the teams to compete well."

Many of the Franciscan runners set new personal records at this meet, as well as breaking old school records.

"Almost everyone ran about a minute faster than they normally do," Kuebler commented.

On the men's team, John Redmond placed 176th, running within 26 minutes for the first time, while Joe Gallagher placed 109th, running within 25 minutes for the first time and making him the second fastest runner in school history. Other notable runners on the men's team were Graham Martin and Nick Long, who took 153rd place and 157th place respectively.

On the women's team, Deirdre Coyle placed 73rd, running within 22 minutes and making her the fifth fastest runner in school history for the women's team. Other notable runners on the women's team were Angela Penza and Lauren Schubilske, who placed 179th and 181st respectively.

"We still were missing two of our top women, so that kind of hurt the women's team but overall we did really well," Kuebler commented.

The cross country teams will spring back into action next Saturday, the 31st, at the AMCC Conference Championships, to be held in Erie, Pennsylvania.
