Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half to lift the Barons to a 4-1 win over D'Youville, Saturday afternoon.
D'Youville grabbed an early lead as Jeffrey Espinoza sent a long ball over the head of Nick Johnson who beat the FUS goalie one on one for the first goal of the game 11:11 into action.
The lead would be short lived, however, as the Barons (6-10-1, 3-5 AMCC) found their equalizer 17 minutes later. After sophomore keeper
Thomas Dosedel made a stop, the Barons took control of the ball down the field and sophomore
Leo Herrmann sent a great pass to junior Joe Duran who put a quality finish on the ball to tie the score at 1-1.
Freshman Leo James scored his first collegiate goal as he corralled a loose ball in front of the net and his shot ricocheted off a defender to beat the goalie and give Franciscan a 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Senior John Imbimbo put the final touches on the win with a pair of goals 18 minutes apart to give FUS the 4-1 win.
"We put a lot of pressure on in the second half and had a lot of good build up," remarked head coach Ward Rogers. "The D'Youville goalie made two fantastic saves in the second half to keep the game close."
Dosedel needed just five saves in the win but played extremely well for the Barons. "Thomas had a good game today. He's been playing extremely well for us and it continued today," remarked coach Rogers.
"We were looking for spaces today and found them and found ways to exploit them and follow our game plan. It was nice to see the guys focus and work hard today," remarked Rogers. He continued "The guys really earned the win today. The back line played really well, Pat Canavan, Dominic Vander Woude, Leo James, and Cuyler Ledyard had great games today."
"We need to stay focused on what we need to do to win and when we do, good things happen for us."
The Barons are back in action on Tuesday when they square off against La Roche in Pittsburgh, Pa. in the final game of the regular season. The game is slated for 1:00 pm.
